"What if I am never happy anymore? What if things are about to fade away?"- sings our popular Hungarian band in their newest song. I think that in this strange period in the minds of many of you such and similar thoughts often pop up. But have you already thought about what influences your own happiness and what you can do to get through also the hardest days in relatively good mood? Today I have put together a 20-piece list for you about what your happiness depends on and how you can contribute to the increase of its level consciously. Enjoy!
To live every minute, be grateful and meditate regularly. If you want to be happy in the short run, then with the help of these techniques you can easily reach your goal. But similarly to changing your diet and sporting habits in case of a lifestyle change, for the long term positive impacts you have to regularly apply the new methods. But what does your long term happiness depend on? Let's have a look at the Top 20 items!
1. YOUR GENETICS:
What you are born together with. This is what you usually cannot change and what determines in ca. 50% what fate you can expect.
2. YOUR SENSE OF PURPOSE:
The more purposeful your life is, the easier you can set and implement targets, the higher chances you have to be happy. It can be useful to sit down in a free minute of yours and write down your most important targets in both your professional and private lives and then from time to time you can revisit them and if needed, you can set out new ones.
3. YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK:
If you are able to spend valuable time with your friends and family, you can already feel much richer. If nowadays you only have the opportunity to do it online, then do it that way, the point is to care for each other. One day the era of personal meetings will come again as well.
4. YOUR FINANCIAL SECURITY:
It is often said that you cannot buy happiness. Researches based on questionning more hundred thousands of people in more than 150 countries have pointed out that richer people are more satisfied with their fates everywhere and they are less anxious. However above a certain income level the impact of extra money on their happiness is relatively low.
5. YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH:
If you exercise regularly, spend relatively much time outside and have a proper diet, you will be more likely to avoid illnesses and be happy. It is never too late to change your lifestyle: either you are 25 or above 40, you can start it any time.
6. THE AMOUNT OF YOUR AVAILABLE FREE TIME:
If you value a little bit more free time more than the money earned through tons of stress, worrying or hated work, then you are quite likely to expect a little bit more balanced life altogether. Certainly it is important to have enough money to make you happy, but have you already seen a person who thanks to the salary earned as a result of many sleepless nights and their possibly accompanying declined health has become more satisfied than had they allowed a little bit more free time for themselves?
7. YOUR PLACE OF LIVING:
Either you believe it or not, as for your happiness it does matter where you live. If for example you spent your childhood by a giant meadow filled with flowers, which gave you a feeling of happiness, and then you had to move to a crowded metropolis with your family for some reason, you can easily feel being trapped now, with lower level of happiness. Search for a place of living, where you can be yourself!
8. YOUR AGE:
The USA survey of Gallup Institute has pointed out that the young and old people in general have a much higher happiness quotient than the middle-aged. Certainly as everywhere there are also exceptions here and it can easily happen that you will also be the happiest in your forties.
9. YOUR QUALIFICATION AND PROFESSION:
If you have earned a university degree and afterwards you are also successful at your work, then according to Lyubomirsky and co. (2005) you might have a little bit higher chances for happiness than if you were less qualified and less committed to your work. However, experts have also proved that your level of happiness does not increase proportionally to the increase in your intelligence level (Diener and co., 1999).
10. YOUR RELATION TO YOUR PET:
If you do not happen to have an own family, you can collect a few pets: this way you can easily become more determined, your self-confidence will increase, you will be less afraid and you will feel less lonely.
11. YOUR BEAUTY:
It's not easy to clearly take a stand regarding whether it's important for you to be beautiful in order to become really happy. According to the 2016 survey of the magazine The Journal of Happiness Studies in high school usually the attractive face, while among the middle-aged the favorable body mass index is what makes people really happy.
12. YOUR EXPECTATIONS TOWARDS YOURSELF:
If you had very strict parents or a tough childhood, you can easily become a perfectionist. As a result of this the more you expect from yourself, the more likely your level of happiness will decrease. The people being seemingly perfect are usually sad, frustrated and stressed.
13. YOUR THOUGHTS AND LEVEL OF HAPPINESS:
You can often hear that it is not important what happens to you, but how you react to it. Nowadays it is not always easy to stay optimistic, but if you manage to preserve your positivity and calm reaction, you can still have more chances for happiness than being pessimistic and frustrated.
14. BEING RELIGIOUS:
Are you more likely to be happy also being religious than being not? The answer for this question is still not decided today. It is sure though that belief often makes building human relations possible and provides security and optimism, so all in all it can lead to a more balanced life.
15. THE QUALITY OF YOUR SLEEP:
Do you sleep well? If your answer is yes, then you are on the best way towards happiness. If your nights are calm and relaxing, from the point of view of happiness it has the same impact as multiplying your salary by four.
16. YOUR SATISFACTION WITH YOUR SEXUAL LIFE:
Yes, your level of happiness also depends on this. If you are more satisfied with your sexual life, then you are more likely to live in a balanced relationship and are more likely to be happier in general.
17. YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA HABITS:
Is it true that if you spend too much time surfing social media sites, then you are having worse chances than those who spend more time offline? Not sure. According to fresh researches your level of happiness is independent from it, so as a fan of networks you can also live a full life, if you personally are happy this way.
18. YOUR LEVEL OF TRUST:
If you can turn to your neighbours, colleagues, family members more trustingly, you will be more likely to look into the future optimistically.
19. YOUR ACTS TOWARDS OTHERS:
Do you remember when you last helped your significant other at housework? Or you did the homework together with your little girl? Or you probably helped your former colleague to get a new job? These might seem only small gestures, but through your voluntary kindness you have also increased your own level of happiness.
20. THE LEVEL OF YOUR INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM:
If your environment accepts you the way you are, then they will almost bring the key to your happy, balanced life on a plate.
This is a long list, isn't it? And how many items there are on it, which you can also influence! Your genetics is given, but almost everything else is in your hands. What impacts your own happiness the most? Do you have a recipe for happiness?
